RALEIGH, Oct. 23, 2008 – John McMillan took the oath of office tonight as the new president of the North Carolina State Bar observed the 75th anniversary of its creation.
The Bar is the state agency that regulates more than 20,000 lawyers who are licensed to practice in North Carolina. The Bar’s key responsibility is the investigation and prosecution of lawyers who violate the Bar’s code of ethics for lawyers. More information on the Bar is available at http://www.ncbar.gov/public.
McMillan comes to the Bar’s presidency after serving nine years on the State Bar’s governing Council and two years as an officer. Before his election to the Council, McMillan chaired the Disciplinary Hearing Commission, the administrative court that hears cases of alleged lawyer misconduct. He succeeds Irvin W. Hankins of Charlotte as president.
