FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Raleigh, NC, November 29, 2018 – A new organization has formed to promote North Carolina’s thriving outdoor recreation industry. The North Carolina Outdoor Recreation Coalition is a new trade association made up of the state’s outdoor recreation businesses, including outdoor gear manufacturers, retailers, guides, and others. According to a recent report from the Outdoor Industry Association, in North Carolina the outdoor recreation industry generates $28 billion in consumer spending annually, and is responsible for 260,000 direct jobs.
“Outdoor recreation is big business in North Carolina, but until now we haven’t had a unified voice,” said Tom Dempsey, CEO of the Brevard-based gear builder SylvanSport, and Chairman of the NCOREC Board of Directors. “The goals of our coalition are to promote existing outdoor recreation companies, to recruit new companies to locate in North Carolina, and to increase public access to outdoor recreation.”
The Coalition has already celebrated early wins by successfully advocating for the establishment of a new North Carolina Office of Outdoor Recreation, now located within the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, and by bringing industry leaders from 11 leading US states to NC to develop the groundbreaking Outdoor Recreation Industry Confluence Accords. The Coalition will work closely with David Knight, the Director of NC’s Office of Outdoor Recreation, to bring new outdoor recreation businesses to the state.
NCOREC needs you and your outdoor recreation businesses, as well as partner nonprofits and educational institutions, to join us! Have your voice heard, be a part of the 2019 lobby day, and help us push the NC legislature to support outdoor recreation. The NC Outdoor Recreation Coalition’s mission is to work with the NC Outdoor Recreation Industry Office to spur economic development, strengthen outdoor infrastructure, improve public health, and ensure that all North Carolinians can benefit from our state’s vibrant outdoor industry and extraordinary outdoor resources.
