Manning Fulton’s Managing Partner, Judd Welborn, was recently recognized as a Managing Partner to Watch by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly. This was a special “Power List” feature that highlighted 19 Managing Partners at 18 of North Carolina’s best law firms.
This honor is well-deserved given Judd’s tireless commitment to Manning Fulton, its employees, and its clients. That commitment was on full display during the COVID-19 pandemic when Judd successfully and seamlessly transitioned the firm’s processes and workflow to the remote environment, all while working to ensure the health and safety of all its employees. As the firm has pivoted to “the new normal,” Judd has continued to embrace strategies and opportunities for growth while constantly examining firm policy and process.
A big believer in the power of the team, Judd has worked to establish a culture of open communication seeking input from and giving agency to the firm’s many stakeholders when making crucial decisions and setting firm strategy.
Just as many of his mentors did when he started at Manning Fulton 25 years ago, Judd prioritizes every member of the Manning Fulton family and draws on the inspiration he felt from those legal giants – Howard Manning and John McMillan – who he is fortunate to have also called law partners and friends. He also believes attorneys should give back to the communities in which they work and live and has pushed Manning Fulton to improve on its decades’ old reputation for community service to get even more involved with local volunteer organizations and expand community engagement within the firm.
In addition to serving as the firm’s Managing Partner, Chair of the firm’s Personnel Committee, and a member of the firm’s Compensation Committee, Judd serves on the North Carolina Bar Association’s Litigation Section Council (where he has recently served as the Co-Chair of the Ethics Committee) and the Wake County Bar Association/Tenth Judicial District Bench-Bar Committee. He is also a former chair of the Board of Trustees of Follow the Child Montessori School in Raleigh, member of the North Carolina Rules Review Commission, and member the Carolina Ballet Board of Directors.
A member of the firm’s Litigation Section, Judd has spent his entire career at Manning Fulton representing clients ranging from Fortune 50 companies to closely held businesses in a wide variety of Complex Litigation and transactional matters involving everything from bet-the-company lawsuits to the negotiation of complex agreements. With a litigation practice that extends well beyond the Triangle area, Judd represents a wide variety of clients in complex business, franchise, real property, and construction litigation matters, as well as condemnation/eminent domain matters. In addition, several of Judd’s clients utilize him as their outside general counsel, and he is also certified as a Civil Superior Court Mediator by the State of North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission.
